Bob has had a remarkable experience with us. His website, Brisbane Security Alarm Systems, increased steeply across all search phrases. From a position where some of his target searches weren’t even in the top 50 (eg commercial security alarm systems) to no1 in Brisbane Google searches, he’s fully reaping the benefits our search engine optimization (SEO).
Shown above is the search rankings progress for his search term “alarm installers Brisbane”. His website has followed a reasonably consisten trend and now is flat out in first place.
Let’s have a look at a few more.
And so on it goes.
So now let’s have a look at how we got here.
Search Success Starts By Analysing Your Failures
To know how to improve Bob’s search results, the first thing we had to ask ourselves was, why was he doing so poorly?
You see, Brisbane Security Alarm Systems had a history of ranking quite well in Google results. Bob’s website had been around for well over 10 years functioning as the engine room of his business. Then it dropped out. The phone went quiet.
Search Engine Audit
As part of our audit we identified an issue with the website’s backlinks. It only had about four. That’s already very low. And two were toxic. One of his healthy backlinks was recently taken over by a Russian spam factory. He had three toxic links and one healthy link. That was the primary factor behind his disfavour with Google.
Building Backlinks & Content
Building healthy backlinks for Bob’s website quickly showed strong results. Part of our campaign to build links was by providing content worth linking to. Posts like Tips To Prevent Burlary proved popular.
Other content, like Bosch Security Alarm System, was more focussed on hitting search keywords. You’ve got to tell Google what you’re all about, or how will they know? Keyword focussed content that is not spammy is a powerful way to grow traffic around specific searches. Bosch systems are always popular, hence why we hit this keyword phrase with its own post.
We’ve come from a low in the 30s to currently hover around 2nd and 3rd spot for Bosch searches.
Usability
What you see above, with the interaction of onsite and offsite SEO, is an indication of how all the elements work together. I have long considered that SEO should never disregard what happens when visitors land on a page. No point getting them there only to find out they don’t like the content. And that’s where usability comes in.
Retention is super important. You want an inquiry or purchase from every visitor. Optimizing your website’s construction (and the content) is part of the process of good SEO.
We’ve worked with Bob to deliver a home page home page both of us are happy with. In the image above you can see what visitors see at a glanse. It tells you what he delivers, gives the main choices for navigation, and a call to action.
All text and images are also optimized to capture his main search engine terms. We’ve used H1, H2, and H3 tags in this content to maximise the impact of the content in search results.
This same process of maximising usability as part of maximising onsite SEO is how good search engine optimization should play out on a website.
